Recognising the profound impact work can have on employees' mental health and overall wellbeing, Fidelidade embarked on a comprehensive survey aimed at understanding the reality of their employees' work experiences and its effects on their lives.
Understanding the employee experience
The first step was to conduct an extensive survey of all employees using the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire COPSOQ II. The results of this survey resulted in their initiative, ‘On the Path to Wellbeing.’
The survey captured a wide range of data, including how employees perceive their work environment, the challenges they face, and the impact these factors have on their mental and emotional wellbeing.
By gathering this information, Fidelidade gained a holistic view of the psychosocial risks (things that can cause psychological harm) present within the organisation. And they sought to take action.
Data-driven action plans
Armed with the survey data, Fidelidade developed action plans tailored to address the issues that came up in the survey. These action plans operated on three levels; individual, manager, and team.
By the end of 2022, Fidelidade embarked on a targeted intervention strategy.
Collaborating with external partners, they conducted a new survey focusing specifically on health and wellbeing and job demands within ten selected group companies. This approach engaged over 900 employees, with participation rates of over 80%.
Early in 2023, guided by the survey data, team leaders from each identified area developed bespoke action plans to address critical psychosocial risks.
The impact was tangible. Through over 30 follow-up sessions, involving approximately 1000 individuals, it was clear the company fostered a culture of open dialogue, mutual support, and holistic wellbeing.
A new assessment starts shortly, involving the entire Fidelidade Group in Portugal. This evaluation not only measures progress but also acts as a guide in charting a path forward - one defined by continuous improvement, collaboration, and commitment to wellbeing.
Conclusion
Fidelidade's commitment to understanding and mitigating psychosocial risks through a data-driven and multi-level approach serves as a model for other organisations.
By prioritising the mental and emotional wellbeing of their employees, Fidelidade has not only enhanced their work environment, but also demonstrated that caring for employees' mental health is integral to organisational and business success.
They said:
‘The success of these actions reaffirms our belief in the power of collective action. As we journey into 2024, we remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing psychosocial wellbeing.
‘At Fidelidade Group, we view mental health not as an individual concern, but as a collective responsibility that should be managed with the same diligence as any workplace safety measure.’
