Overview

This course will give your people a greater understanding of how to reduce the stigma and raise awareness around suicide in the workplace. Attendees will gain the confidence to support people at risk and develop the skills to have conversations with a colleague during their time of crisis.

Course content

  • Stigma around suicide – the impact of stigmatized language and attitudes.
  • The role of the workplace in suicide prevention and factors for suicide risk, including workplace factors
  • Framework for how to respond and have a conversation with a colleague who discloses information around suicidal thoughts or behaviour (e.g. Four Point Plan, ‘Recognise, Normalise, Respond’)
  • Case studies / scenarios to work through stages and reinforce learning
  • How to create a safe space for an individual in crisis / experiencing suicidal thoughts
  • Ongoing support plans, such as check-ins and reasonable adjustments
  • Internal and external support avenues and resources for individuals in crisis
  • Internal and external support and self-care for HR staff and other colleagues (e.g. Allies) impacted by these conversations
  • Postvention actions and support – what to do and where to go if a colleague dies by suicide

Course outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Feel more confident in responding to suicide risk.
  • Understand their role in supporting colleagues following a death by suicide.
  • Understand how to respond to, and have a conversation with, someone at risk of suicide and have knowledge of helpful frameworks to guide these conversations.
  • Feel more confident in reassuring, supporting, and creating safe spaces for those at risk or in crisis.
  • Have knowledge of places and routes for support, both for those at risk and as support for themselves following difficult conversations.
